Gnomish Giant rabbits grow extremely quickly. It may feel like you need to feed a lot of pellets, however, this will lead only to obesity and the inability to breed. The higher the protein, the more likely obesity will occur. Pellets are primarily made from a high alfalfa base and thusly, must be limited. Adjust the amount fed based on your rabbits body profile, checking often. GG rabbits were designed for quick growth on an 80% grass hay diet. Fat rabbits will be unable to conceive or breed. The higher the protein content of the feed, the less you should be offering a day. We recommend 16% protein feed for best results, with free access to grass hay daily.
Stop free feedin kits that you plan to hold back as a breeder by 4/5 months of age. Giving too much time between breeding can also lead to obesity internally, and smaller litters or inability to breed. This applies to males and females alike.
This question can seem a bit loaded. Other giant breeds it is recommende to wait until your rabbit is 8 months to one year. The GG’s were not bred from other giant breed rabbits, but by selective breeding Rex to Silver Fox rabbits. It is important with your GG, to breed early and often to keep them in prime condition and avoid obesity.
We start trying breeding with our GG around 16-18 weeks and up. Some mature more quickly, and others more slowly so if you don’t get babies even tho you had fall offs, know that they are really excited to be moms, but are most likely still developing egg or sperm production. Be patient, and keep trying monthly until you have success. If you have questions, please message us.
The GG does, kept in prime condition can breed 6+ years. The typical span for breeders in other commercial rabbit breeds are about 2 to 3 years for females. Our record for in-house bucks is 5 years to date. Only because the project needs us to turn over breeders frequently for progression of the breed development.
